Meet the team with Ciaran King

  1. How did you first get involved in the aviation industry?

I applied for an apprenticeship with a company based in Dublin Airport. From there I got both practical, on the job experience and education from an aviation school in Shannon and Technological University Dublin. I was working in Base Maintenance which is basically overhaul and inspection of aircraft in a hangar. I changed to Line maintenance thereafter. I continued to progress by obtaining Various Aircraft Type ratings and continue to do so as there is a wide range of aircraft you need to be qualified on for working with a third-party maintenance provider in Dublin.

2. Can You describe your main responsibilities in your current role?

As an aircraft maintenance engineer, my main responsibilities include performing routine inspections and maintenance on aircraft systems, diagnosing, and troubleshooting technical issues, ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards, documenting all maintenance work, collaborating with other teams to coordinate schedules, performing emergency repairs, and staying updated with the latest advancements in aviation technology. These tasks ensure aircraft are safe, reliable, and ready for flight operations.

3. What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your job?

One of the biggest challenges in my job as an aircraft maintenance engineer is ensuring timely and accurate troubleshooting and repairs under tight deadlines to minimize aircraft downtime. Additionally, keeping up with constantly evolving technology and regulatory requirements demands continuous learning and adaptation. Balancing safety and efficiency, especially during emergency repairs, while managing the pressure of maintaining strict compliance with aviation standards, is also a significant challenge.

4. How would you explain the significance of line maintenance to someone outside the aviation industry?

Line maintenance is crucial for the safety and reliability of aircraft. It involves routine checks and minor repairs performed between flights to ensure the aircraft is in optimal condition. This includes inspecting critical systems like engines, avionics, and hydraulics, addressing any immediate issues, and ensuring the aircraft is safe for its next flight. Essentially, line maintenance helps prevent potential problems, reduces the risk of delays or cancellations, and ensures passenger safety by keeping the aircraft airworthy.

5. What do you like to do outside of work?

Coming from the Irish countryside, I have always had a strong passion for machines. Anything that moves, makes plenty of noise, or has an engine will take my attention. I enjoy working on and with cars, tractors, and motorbikes in which I own which I take out for a ride and keep myself busy maintaining.

6. What is your favourite movie?

I have lots of favourite films which are difficult to choose from. One of my all-time favourites would be ‘’Gone In 60 seconds’’. It’s a classic at this stage but I feel it will never get old.
